Integrated control of trees and palms
The pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a common pest in areas where there are pines and conifers. These caterpillars, which develop from moths, can pose a health risk to humans and domestic animals.
Pine processionary caterpillars have stinging hairs that contain a toxic substance called thaumatopin. These hairs can be easily released when the caterpillars feel threatened. When they come into contact with the skin, they can cause irritation, allergies and inflammation. Additionally, if inhaled, the hairs can affect the airways and cause respiratory problems, especially in asthmatic or sensitive people.
Pets, such as dogs and cats, are also exposed to the risks of pine processionary. If an animal comes into contact with caterpillars or ingests their hair, it can experience allergic reactions, inflammation of the mouth, tongue and throat, and even difficulty breathing that can lead to death.
Given the health risks, it is essential to take appropriate prevention and control measures to reduce the presence of the pine processionary. One of the most effective strategies is chemical treatment in the early stages of the pest's life cycle. This involves the application of specific products that act on the caterpillars and prevent their development.
The appropriate time to carry out the preventive treatment may vary, although it is generally recommended to carry out the treatment between the months of October to early December, before the caterpillars descend from the trees and bury their nests in the ground. By applying the treatment at this stage, the life cycle of the pest is interrupted and its population is significantly reduced.
The type of treatment applied by Palmera Sana to control this pest is endotherapy (injection into the trunk). This is a technique with 100% effectiveness, totally safe for the applicator, living beings and the environment. The dispersion of pesticides into the environment is zero and represents a 100% water saving compared to aerial fumigation.
The application of treatments through endotherapy must be carried out by professionals with a high degree of training.
